The launch event was a resounding success, attracting over 100 attendees, including international students, young professionals, and seasoned industry leaders. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the energy and enthusiasm of individuals eager to learn, network, and grow. The event featured a stellar lineup of speakers, including the Honorary Pierre Yang MLC, StudyPerth CEO Derryn Belford, and APYP Director Louisa Cotter. A special shoutout to Sky Vidamo and the team for orchestrating such an impactful and inspiring event. And, of course, kudos to the rockstar Model MC, Toto Boutdara, who kept the event lively and engaging!
During the panel discussion, I had the opportunity to share my journey as an entrepreneur, which began as an international student and evolved into a successful business career. One of the key messages I emphasised was the critical role of mentorship in my journey. Four years ago, I received a mentorship gift of eight one-hour sessions valued at $800. This experience was invaluable, helping me understand the type of mentor I needed—someone more mature with extensive wisdom and knowledge. It reinforced the importance of having a growth mindset and the value of learning from various sources, including virtual mentors like Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy, and Zig Ziglar. Learning is a lifelong journey, and we can gain insights from everyone around us.
Another successful entrepreneur with an inspiring story, Cheryl, joined me on the panel. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from the University of Santo Tomas and is certified in the Philippines and Australia. She moved to Australia during the 2009 global financial crisis and founded a multi-million dollar company, Five C Marketing Pty Ltd, also known as Salt Master Perth. Cheryl leads a culturally diverse team and has been recognised for her achievements, including being featured in the book 50 Women in the Talks.
Cheryl shared her own experiences with mentorship, emphasising the importance of having a mentor who is not only competent but genuinely interested in one’s growth. She spoke about how a leader in her business gifted her a mentorship program, which helped her identify the type of mentor she needed. Cheryl also highlighted her engagement with virtual mentors and their impact on her personal and professional development.
Cheryl and I highlighted the significance of mentorship, continuous learning, and community support in achieving success. We shared personal anecdotes and insights, highlighting how mentors and a growth mindset have been instrumental in our careers. The APYP Mentorship Program aims to provide similar opportunities for young professionals and international students, offering guidance, support, and the chance to connect with experienced mentors.
Launching this mentorship program is not just an event; it’s a movement toward empowering the next generation of leaders. As someone who has benefited immensely from mentorship, I am passionate about giving back and supporting others on their journey. The impact of mentorship is profound, and I encourage all young professionals and international students to take advantage of such opportunities, seek out mentors, and embrace the mindset of continuous learning.
The Australia Philippines Young Professionals in WA Mentorship Program is a game-changer for our community. It’s a platform where dreams are nurtured, skills are refined, and connections are made.
